The Pig is Here

Monday 12/05/11 my new gun arrived... the A&K MK43 Mod 0.  It will undergo a Mod 1 conversion - just a railed foregrip and maybe I'll add a top rail.  Right now I just put on a STAR MK43 Mod 1 flash suppressor and Spartan 14mm CCW to CW adapter.  I'll have a review up soon, hopefully over the weekend.





I didn't even have time to fire it yet so here is a very basic preview of the externals.

  • Full metal barrel & locker set, bi-pod, sights, receiver, and top feed tray
  • Surprisingly sturdy plastic parts
  • I love the design of the M60.  Quick detach barrel with no tools, included bi-pod, flip up front sight, fold down carrying handle, trigger guard comes off like on Armalites, very easy to get to the mechbox (4 steps, no screws)
  • Quick spring change feature
  • Good weight at 16 pounds with the empty mag and dummy cartridges installed 
  • 3500 round auto winding mag
  • Adjustable ROF via the knob underneath the flash hider, adjusts from 12-20 RPS according to specs (I'll test this out over the weekend)
  • Came with a 9.6v 1200mAh Ni-MH battery and 300mAh trickle charger (which I'll have to use for the review)
  • Has two sling mounts
  • Flash hider wasn't glued on

Dislikes

  • Wobbly barrel (side movement)
  • Wobbly bi-pod
  • Carrying handle doesn't feel very rigid
  • Wobbly magazine
  • No rubber cheek resk
  • Exposed wires around magazine area (one for magazine current, one for the battery)
  • Inconvenient magazine securing method (two straps around the magazine tray)
  • Battery compartment - stuff the included 1200mAh mini type battery or a PEQ-2/PEQ-15 type inside the mag pouch
  • Came with all plastic, all orange birdcage flash hider (but I knew this because of ASGI pics)
  • No trademarks - better than fake 6mm BB AEG trademarks though, so I'm actually somewhat thankful of this after coming from an ICS M4

I really wish they used an AK style V3 mechbox like Inokatsu instead of the M249 style.  This way there would be a ton of battery space in the stock like on the Inokatsu (Turnigy 11.1v 3600mAh Li-Po would fit with ease) and the battery wire would be hidden.  I am a bit weary of the electrical components on this gun (microswitch, MOSFET, adjustable ROF) but we'll see how well this works out.  I dislike how the magazine is secured - the feed tray should have tracks on the sides, and the mag should clamp onto these and slide down into place.  Oh well, I like it a lot so far just because the MK43 is my favorite gun.  Can't wait to see how it performs.

Madbull X-Factor Piston Review


After several delays my reviews on Madbull's recent AEG upgrade parts are finally coming online.  We already looked at the Ultimate V2 Spring Guide which is a solid product that does what it's supposed to do.  Now I'll be showing you the X-Factor piston - Madbull's new lineup of nylon fiber pistons.  I have here the full tooth model.

First Look


I received this product directly from Madbull for this review.  It came packaged like so.

After opening the box, which includes some information on the product, we get this.  A nice looking reddish piston.  Hey, it almost matches that Ultimate V2 Spring Guide!  As you can see this piston features a fifteen (or sixteen, people count differently) full teeth with the first seven being made out of heat-treated steel.  What I like here is that the teeth are fully supported on both sides, contrary to the piston it is replacing.

The X-Factor piston includes three lubricant grooves on each side which is more efficient than the usual one per side.  It's made out of nylon and fiber, similar to Deep Fire pistons which I've used in the past.  This makes it lighter and softer than usual polycarbonate pistons, allowing it to absorb more impact rather than transmitting it.

Unfortunately this piston does not have the second and third teeth closest to the sector gear removed.  The downside to this is that the sector gear might first engage either the second, third or even fourth tooth instead of the first tooth.  This is known as premature engagement and it can cause a number of problems and failures.  Now I'm going to have to use a sharp blade to remove these two teeth after this review.  Other manufacturers have removed the second tooth already (such as VFC, G&G and SHS) so it would be nice to see everyone do it.  Removing the third tooth as well would be better.  

Finally here is the backside of the piston.  The usual seam line runs down it, and unfortunately there are no ports anywhere on the piston to reduce its weight (known as swiss cheesing to some).  Not many pistons come like this, in fact the only ones that come to mind are the Airsoft Elite skeletal piston and SHS 14 tooth piston.  The X-Factor piston is not terribly heavy however, it feels about the same as the stock ICS polycarbonate piston.

So my first impression of the X-Factor piston is what I expected.  I'm impressed by the decent teeth supporting.  I expected it to be heavier than it really is.  It seems sturdy - after mildly flexing it through a rag with pliers it can move a little but go back to its original shape.  Now lets move onto the installation.

Installation

For this section I'll briefly go over the installation process into the upper mechbox assembly of an ICS M4A1 R.A.S.  Installing pistons might not always go as planned - some may be too fat to fit properly.  We'll see how this one goes... cross your fingers!

First I must access the mechbox.  Since I have an ICS M4, I only have to remove the rear body pin and then I can slide the upper mechbox assembly out of the gun.  You can find more installation details on mechbox.com if you need them.

Ah, here's that potmetal mechbox.  Lets open that sucker up.  All I need is a Phillips screw driver and a hex key for the rear screw.  Here we have a bunch of stock ICS parts, with the exception of the Madbull Ultimate V2 spring guide I reviewed not so long ago.

We can see here that the Madbull piston looks considerably better than the stock ICS one.  No, I'm not referring to the color aspect.  I'm referring to the fact that only the first metal tooth on the ICS piston is supported, while all of them are supported on the Madbull.  The X-Factor piston also has three lubricant grooves instead of one as well as a more solid feel.

To remove the stock piston I had to twist off the piston head and then remove the spring assembly, which has a little metal end cap which is what the piston head attaches to.  After doing this, I install the spring and end cap into the Madbull X-Factor piston like so.


The next step is to twist on the piston head.  We'll be using a stock ICS polycarbonate piston head which has a nice o-ring seal, but no ports.


Now I install the cylinder assembly, followed by the piston assembly.  I did not bother polishing the piston tracks on the mechbox casing. 

After compressing the spring I then clamped the mechbox shell together and re-installed the screws.  Now we're finished with the mechbox assembly.


The Madbull X-Factor piston fit into the ICS mechbox with no issues, so now there's only one thing left to do... performance testing.

Testing

The test setup for the Madbull X-Factor piston is as follows.

  • ICS M4A1 R.A.S. AEG
  • High Current T-Plugs (knockoff Deans)
  • 25A automotive fuse assembly
  • Extreme-fire SW-S MOSFET
  • SHS high speed motor with gold plated connectors
  • SHS 16:1 gears
  • Stock alloy 6mm bushings
  • Element trigger switch assembly with silver plated wire (I believe 18AWG teflon wire)
  • Madbull Ultimate V2 Spring Guide
  • Stock spring (about M100 - M105)
  • Madbull X-Factor Piston
  • Stock ICS polycarbonate piston head
  • Stock ICS brass type-1 cylinder
  • Stock ICS polycarbonate cylinder head
  • Stock ICS polycarbonate air nozzle
  • Stock ICS hop-up bucking and inner barrel
This test weapon fires at approximately 350 FPS and 25-27 RPS with 0.20g BBs and an Intellect 9.6v 2000mah Ni-MH battery.  I will be firing approximately 10,000 BBs through it, making avid but not excessive use of fully automatic.  After doing this, I opened up the mechbox to inspect the piston.



Here is the piston after the testing.  After wiping off some of the gunk that it may have picked up from the mechbox's piston rails and cylinder, we can see that the teeth are in perfect condition.  Do keep in mind that this was only done at 350 FPS and 25-27 RPS.  I will be putting it through more tests over time as I continue to upgrade my gun, which I hope to have shooting at around 400 FPS and 35 RPS soon.  Compared to the stock ICS piston, there is no noticeable wear however I only use the ICS piston in stock configuration (350 FPS and 15-16 RPS).  So I must say here, job well done.

Conclusion

The Madbull X-Factor piston performed well and lived up to my expectations.  It has a moderate weight, similar to the stock piston, and came out after 10,000 rounds at 350 FPS and 25-27 RPS looking brand new.  It didn't damage any other mechbox either due to its moderate weight.  I'll be using this piston as I tweak my gun even more.

  • Build Quality: The Madbull X-Factor piston is strong, has moderate weight, features three lubricant grooves, and includes seven heat-treated steel teeth.  In addition to this, all of the teeth are fully supported on both sides.  However I'll take off a half point because of the fact that the 2nd and 3rd teeth closest to the sector gear are not removed, increasing probability of premature engagement.  4.5/5
  • Performance: The piston came out with no noticeable wear, and it didn't damage any other parts.  The test weapon's rate of fire was not affected since there isn't much of a weight difference between the stock piston and Madbull piston.  5/5
  • Value: Airsplat has both X-Factor pistons listed at $20, which is the same as the Ultimate V2 Spring Guide I just reviewed.  Just like with Madbull's spring guide, this price is higher than many other options out there although it isn't the most expensive piston either.  I think I'll go with a 3.5/5, considering the results shown by others with sub $10 SHS pistons in extremely demanding setups.  Decent but not great value here.
  • Overall: Averaging the above scores, we get a total of 4.33/5

PROS

  • Strong nylon fiber build quality
  • Not too heavy
  • Three lubricant grooves
  • Seven heat-treated steel teeth
  • All teeth are fully supported on both sides

CONS

  • Does not omit 2nd and 3rd teeth to reduce chances of premature engagement
  • Doesn't include ports anywhere to further reduce weight
  • Price is higher than other tried and true pistons

Finally...

After tragically breaking the trigger contacts in my ICS M4A1, my new one finally came in along with a MOSFET so that it won't break this time with a measly 9.6v 2000mah Ni-MH Intellect battery.  I'll be installing all of it into my gun so that those Madbull reviews will finally come online.  But first, let's see that replacement switch assembly.  It's made by Element and wired to the rear (I'll be using a battery pouch from now on).


Well, there it is with large tamiya connectors (will be replaced with knockoff Deans) and silver plated wire.  Don't let that last part fool you - the wire is of an extremely thin gauge.  I'll expand on this later.  The contacts themselves are also a bit of a letdown.  While the moving one clearly has a silver plating/coating (or maybe it's just made out of silver), the other part is just copper which isn't as conductive as silver.  I picked up this switch assembly for $8.99 on Airsoft-Club.  Whatever, it should be fine with my little 9.6v battery.  I won't even think about running an 11.1v lipo on it before rewiring it.  Next up is the extreme-fire SW-S MOSFET.


Ah, that's a Hexfet IRLS3034-7P.  The datasheet can be read here.  That yellow wire was also part of my order - it's a 20AWG wire which is recommended for its purpose (it will be connected to the trigger assembly).  That silver wire came with the Element switch assembly.  Now, is it just me or do they look as if they're the same gauge?  So my switch assembly came with 20AWG wiring... seriously most at least come with 18AWG if I'm not mistaken and most users switch to 16AWG.  Jeez... good thing this entire solution was only intended to be temporary until AWS products become available again.  I'll be going for an AWS Raptor with a Scorpion module.

Madbull Sling Adapter QD Swivel Review



Madbull is a name widely recognized in the airsoft world for their variety of products, including grenades and grenade launchers as well as various external and internal upgrade parts.  Thanks to Madbull airsoft, today we're looking at one of their smaller external accessories - the SA03 which is a sling adapter with a quick detach swivel.


As you can see there are three models available - the SA01, SA02 and SA03.  The SA01 is a fixed mount with a horizontal loop while the SA02 is a fixed mount with a vertical loop.  We're looking at the SA03 which includes a QD swivel adapter.  The specifications are listed below.

So this product is constructed out of aluminum to keep weight down, with a steel mounting screw for durability.  It attaches to any standard picatinny rail and includes a QD sling swivel so it's quite a universal sling adapter.  Now lets take a closer look at the product and its packaging.


As far as packaging goes, this sling swivel includes no surprises.  It's inside a sealed bag and on the opposite side you'll find an image and short description of the SA01, SA02 and SA03.  Opening the packaging reveals the hard anodized aluminum sling adapter and QD swivel.  It's considerably lighter than the sling mounts on my M4.



The swivel rotates in place and works like any swivel.  To remove it, press down on the button and then unscrew it with your fingers.  The adapter and swivel come pre-installed to a picatinny rail adapter.


The picatinny rail mount utilizes a flat head steel screw which works with small or large flat head screw drivers.  This is how I will be installing it onto my ICS M4A1 R.A.S. AEG.


To install it onto a picatinny rail, simply loosen this screw, attach it to the picatinny rail and then tighten the screw with a flat head screw driver.  If you want to mount it to a gun without a picatinny rail, you can use the included sling swivel.


Now it's attached to the bottom picatinny rail on my M4's R.A.S. unit.



One thing I noticed is that the paint scratches off quite easily with a screw driver or key, but not with your fingers.  However if you have it installed in such a way that the sling mount flaps around and hits a part of the gun, you will lose some paint over time.  Thankfully it isn't mounted in such a way - the sling mount is clear of any obstructions aside from my M4's connector.  Now lets install a UTG 3-point sling onto it.




Thanks to the picatinny rail mount on the Madbull SA03 sling adapter/swivel, I can now remove the triangle front sight post and pre-installed sling adapter and switch to a longer R.I.S. unit, while not losing my front sling mount.  This product is a great accessory for any rifle in need of a sling - whether it needs a front or rear sling mount.  It can be mounted onto virtually any gun thanks to the QD swivel and picatinny rail mounts.  Now it's time to sum up this review with a list of pros and cons and then a final score.

PROS

  • Universal mounting options - sling swivel stud or picatinny rail options
  • Full metal construction - combination of aluminum and steel for light weight and durability

CONS

  • Paint scratches off rather easily

The only website I've found this product listed at is albertaairsoft for $35 although it should become widely available in the near future.

Careful...

This is another post regarding airsoft.  To those who don't know, most replica AR magazines are slightly shorter than the real 30 round STANAG magazines.  The only exceptions I know of are the ICS 450 round hi-cap and G&G 450 round hi-cap.  I wanted to find a full size mid cap mag and I found the ECHO 1 Extended 120 round mid capacity magazine.  Very interesting product, I must say...


What a long mag!  It's also grey which is a nice contrast in my opinion.  Here it is next to an ICS 450 round hi-cap - it's about a half inch longer.


Why so long?  Why that's because it's based on a 40 round magazine.  So for what it is, it's actually too short.  It's made out of metal although it seems like thinner metal than my ICS magazine, but I suppose it's robust enough.  It has nice trademarks on the side.


The bottom shows a Noveske trademark.  That's funny... looking on their website I don't see a 40 round magazine anywhere.

So it looks nice... but how is the functionality?  Well I have one word for that... horrible.  They advertise it as a 120 round mid cap but it only holds 75.  To drive my point even further, it jams all the time.  Don't blame the BBs... they're made by the same company - ECHO 1.  And the properties of their BBs are very nice.  You'd think they'd test their own magazines with their own BBs right?  Even if it does not jam and you get to run one o these through your gun, it will not feed the last 15-20 BBs.  So this "120 round magazine" is only good for 55-60 rounds, about half of what it is rated for.  This might be a lemon but either way don't bother with it, it's not an accurate representation of it's real-life counterpart.  I need to get some JG quickwind mags...

I also got to try out a Mad Bull blue bucking, made of 60 degree rubber.  So it's nice and soft... softer than usual 70-90 degree buckings although not as soft as Guarder's clear 50 degree one.  But buckings this soft are a PAIN to install... so much so that I gave up on it.  The thing just stretched out too much and blocked the C-clip from installing property.  To hell with it.  Looking at the bucking though I'm sure it would have made a nice upgrade... it's softer so it can give a more crisp backspin on the BB and the better contact with the BB would definitely help.  I might try again one day but not any time soon.

I also got my SHS 16:1 gears and SHS high speed motor.  My pics of the motor disappeared but I have some pics of the gears.




The shimming is still off however, as the ROF of the gun has not changed.  I hate shimming...

New Stuff

So I got some new stuff for my armory today, and one of them is a necessity in my opinion for any M16, M4, SCAR and other rifles that use the same pistol grip.  I hate the stock one - it isn't comfortable at all.  I ordered a UTG Ergonomic Pistol Grip from airsoftpost.com (out of stock on airsoftgi).  Amazon has the real-steel ones (not interchangeable).  So here's a bit of information about it.


^ So you can see it installed right there.  It's made out of a polymer material and the entire thing has what seems to be a rubber coating over it.  Small, low-profile grooves are pre-cut for each finger.  The left side has a thumbrest as you can see.  Left handed people are left out as always.


If you hate the stock grip like I do then a new one is a must.  I bought a real-steel one for only $15 on Amazon, but the airsoft one will set you back $20-$25 (go figure).  They are very similar but there are some noticeable differences.  First of all the real-steel one is much more narrow and won't mount to any airsoft gun. Second, the real-steel version can't house a motor - instead it has a compartment in the bottom which holds anything you desire (batteries, small notes, whatever).  The shape is slightly different as you will see in the photos below.

The version designed for real guns is uninstalled and on the right, while the airsoft one is on the left installed onto the gun.  You can notice that the real version extends past to the trigger guard, unlike the airsoft one.  You can also see that the airsoft version bulges out more in order to hold the motor.  This has me thinking... maybe VFC guns use real steel grips?

Looking from the right we can see more of the slight shape difference.  Again the airsoft version is installed on the gun (right side) while the one for real guns is uninstalled on the left.

The airsoft one on the right has a motor adjustment plate while the real steel version on the left has a storage compartment.

Here's a closer look of the airsoft version.

While this is the airsoft one, both have a bulge on the right side.  I have no clue what it's for.  It isn't uncomfortable but it is different than the standard grip so it may take some getting used to.  Still this grip is a worthy investment for any gun that uses M16 type pistol grips.

I also picked up a pair of UTG Full Seal Tactical Goggles for $15.  They have a soft, light strap that is adjustable and a reinforced polycarbonate lens that is torture tested by being hit with a 0.20g BB fired from a 450 FPS gun from 21 feet away all the way to point blank range.  It is also ventilated so it won't fog, and it is extremely clear.

How clear?  Here's a little sample picture which doesn't really do it justice, but it's the best I can do.


So that's my new stuff.  I also got a 5,000 ct bag of ECHO 1 0.25g BBs which are very smooth, glossy (although not quite as much as Airsoft Elite), have no seams and no visible injection nipple.  Some sources state that they average 5.98mm diameter with a 0.01mm deviation but the bag shows 5.95mm +/- 0.01mm.  With a 0.01mm deviation they are not the most consistent BBs but I've had no problems yet.  I have however hit the top part of a fire hydrant at 100+ feet away 10/10 times.  I also got a Version 6 Propane adapter since it's more cost effective to get Propane and silicon oil instead of green gas.  So that's all for now, I hope to present some reviews of products in the near future.

ICS M4A1 R.A.S. Review

ICS has become a well known AEG manufacturer throughout the years, being one of the first to offer a reliable full metal AEG.  One thing that stood out was their M16 series and their split level gearbox.  In 2007 they updated their M16/M4 lineup with several internal upgrades such as metal bushings and an M100 spring.  The model we're looking at is from the 2007 lineup - the ICS M4A1 R.A.S.

I purchased this gun way back in 2008 from AirsoftGI for $350.  I wanted the best M4 in that price range, and after narrowing down my choices between ICS, Classic Army and G&G I ended up picking the ICS.  Why?  Well... the two piece gearbox stood out and it seemed to have nice stock parts already.  I liked the functioning forward assist button which decompresses the spring tension.  All in all it looked like a convenient and attractive M4.

Accessories and Externals

The gun comes in a black detailed cardboard box showing promotional images of the gun as well as specifications for it and listings of other ICS M4 models.  I don't have a picture of the box, but here's what was inside - the full metal ICS M4A1 R.A.S. with a side folding metal stock, two 450 round metal high capacity magazines, an ICS PEQ2 replica which holds the battery, a Sanyo 9.6v 1700mah Ni-Cad battery, a standard wall charger, a vertical foregrip/bi-pod combination (known as a Gripod) and a 1,000 ct bottle of ICS 0.2g high polished seamless BBs.  AirsoftGI also included a slip that indicates they've tested the rifle and recorded 350 FPS with 0.20g BBs.

Upon closer examination of the gun one thing stood out - the build quality.  This thing is almost entirely metal.  From what I gather it's aluminum.  The only non-metal piece is the composite pistol grip which has a nice sturdy feel to it.  There is no wobble on this gun whatsoever.  It has a nice semi-gloss black finish which looks dark grey under intense lighting.  When shouldered it's not the most comfortable rifle I've ever held.  There is no cheek rest and the pistol grip is not my preferred type but I can still be accurate when firing it.

On the left side of the gun you have control over the folding mechanism of the stock.  The selector switch moves very smoothly between Safe, Semi and Auto.  The trademarks are laser engraved and include an ICS logo as well as normal AEG and 6mm caliber trademarks.  I would have liked to see some Colt, or even Olympic Arms and 5.56 trademarks but this is fine.  The receiver is as sturdy as they come and on top of it is a metal carrying handle which includes a fully adjustable dual-aperture rear sight and dual thumbscrew mount.  The bolt catch unfortunately does not function.


Looking closer reveals the details I just mentioned.

Here is how it looks with the carrying handle removed.  This allows you to mount a huge variety of optics thanks to the picatinny rail.  

On the right side of the receiver there is a dust cover and black moving bolt which is controlled by the charging handle which does not fully open like other AEGs.  The magazine release button is over here as well and should be accessed with your right index finger if you're right handed, or right thumb if you're left handed. Inside of the bolt is the tool free hop-up adjustment which is much nicer than other M16 type AEGs.  The only complaint here is the dust cover - it doesn't stay shut very easily.  Filing a bit of excess metal where it catches supposedly does the trick, I hope it does for me.



Close-up of the hop-up adjustment dial.  Because of the lack of a functioning bolt catch you most hold the charging handle back while adjusting the hop-up.  Moving the wheel downwards increases the hop-up.

Here is that metal R.A.S. unit which stands out in the name.  It is made out of a single piece of machined aluminum and is ridiculously sturdy.  It is a free floating design - loosening the two screws visible in this image allows you to twist the R.A.S. foregrip clockwise which loosens it.  Once loosened you can remove it if you have already removed the front sight.  I stripped these two screws and now it's easy to knock out of place so I suggest getting some backup screws of this type.

The front sight is adjustable and held in place by several steel pins which must be forced out in order for removal.  The same applies to the front sling mount.

The barrel is extremely solid and has some nice markings on it.  No 6mm BB markings here!  The metal flash hider normally has a blazed orange front but that came off with a bit of nail polish remover.  However you should keep a backup orange flash hider for obvious reasons.  It is easily removable - remove a single allen screw and then  rotate it until it falls off.  This reveals a 14mm CCW threaded muzzle.

The barrel is kept in place by this small allen screw which is located behind the front sight post and underneath the R.A.S. foregrip.  

Let's go back to the stock now.  It is very sturdy and all metal.  It should be noted that when unfolded it is longer than an LE stock or Crane stock in a fully extended position.  There is no rubber butt pad or cheek rest unfortunately, however a crane stock rubber butt pad fits but falls off occasionally.  To fold or unfold it, push upward on the hinging mechanism.  It folds to the left side.

The ICS M4 rifles use a unique stock mounting mechanism which is far more convenient than that of a regular M4.  Rather than using a screw driver down the buffer tube, all you have to do is use a flat head screwdriver and loosen this one screw.  You can however use normal M4 stocks on the ICS M4.

As previously mentioned, there are two rear sight apertures.  The larger one is for closer ranges while the smaller one is for long range target engagement.  I prefer H&K sites but these do the job just fine and can easily be changed by removing the carrying handle.


Now let's look at those accessories.  First up is that "Gripod".  It is a large vertical foregrip with retractable bi-pod legs.  Press the button to extend the bi-pod legs, and simply push the legs back into the foregrip to conceal them.  It is mounted to a picatinny rail with a single thumbscrew and it is made entirely of plastic.  It is quite sturdy though.


Two 450 round aluminum high capacity magazines were included with the gun.  They feed well but one of them stopped working for some reason.  These magazines are full sized unlike smaller 300-350 round AEG hi-cap mags which is a nice feature.

The PEQ2 replica is made out of a textured thin plastic and can be a pain to open.  You must twist the caps off although one of them is very small and hard to grab with your fingers.  Pliers can do the trick though, just don't squeeze too hard.  This PEQ2 replica can hold ICS's add-on laser sight.  Unfortunately you will have lots of exposed wiring when using battery boxes which hurts aesthetics.

The gun came with a 9.6v 1700mah Sanyo battery and a standard wall charger which has been misplaced therefore not photographed.  It fits in the PEQ2 box with little room to spare, but closes easily enough.  My Intellect 9.6v 2000mah PEQ2 battery fits with lots of room to spare.  Butterfly, nun-chuck and mini-type batteries will also fit the PEQ2 box.

That's it for the accessories.  The 1,000 ct bottle of BBs is nice to have and the standard ICS 0.20g BBs are of good quality.  They were relatively glossy and had no visible seams but a visible injection nipple.  They were yellow - in the first photo you see it loaded with Airsoft Elite 0.23g BBs.  

Anyway, let's put it together and see how it looks.


The ICS M4A1 R.A.S. is a very nice looking gun, that's for sure.  The finish is wonderful and very durable - no scratched off paint here except on the ends of the foregrip rails since I mount and dismount all sorts of things up there.  The only wobble comes from the magazine in the mag well but it's very minor.  My G&P 110 round VN mid cap has no wobble at all.  As far as I know the ICS M4 isn't compatible with aftermarket receivers without modification, but I wouldn't be changing this one anyway just for some better trademarks.  So the externals are very well done, lets see how things are inside of the ICS M4.

The Internals

Now we will open up the ICS M4A1 R.A.S. and see if the internals are as impressive as the externals.  A big deal about the gun is the split level gearbox.  In this section we'll see how it works.  Disassembly is almost the same as the real steel M4.  In this case you must first push the forward assist which decompresses spring tension.  This needs to be done after firing the rifle.  Once this is done, switch the gun to Semi since it's supposed to make disassembly of the lower gearbox easier.  After doing this you'll want to knock out the pins holding the front sight in place.  Remove the front sight and then remove the two screws holding the R.A.S. foregrip in place.  Here is a photo of those once again.


With those screws removed and the front sight post removed you can twist the foregrip clockwise to loosen it and slide it off of the barrel.  This gives you access to the 16 gauge low resistance wiring coming from the mechbox.  Here's a closeup of the wiring - a fuse is included as well.


The wiring itself is not too stiff and not too loose so no complaints there.  It's easy to route.  This is only necessary if you wish to rewire the gun.  Now let's look at receiver disassembly.  The M4 has an upper and lower receiver and it is held in place by two steel pins - one just behind and slightly above the selector switch and the other at the front of the receiver near the trademarks.  Here's a closeup on the left receiver side again.


Push out the rear receiver pin first and then you get this.


So all you have to do is remove one pin and then you can slide out the upper gearbox.  The rear receiver pin is what holds the two gearbox pieces together.  If you wish to remove the lower gearbox, you must remove two screws on the bottom of the pistol grip which gives you access to the motor.  Remove the motor contacts and then pull the motor out.  I don't have photos of this because my motor contacts are soldered now because they broke loose.  Anyway once you have the motor removed you can insert a screw driver into the pistol grip and remove the screw(s) holding it in place.  Once removed you can pull the pistol grip off.  After this remove the screw holding the magazine release button in place and remove the mag release assembly.  You can find tutorials of this on youtube - it's very straightforward.  The lower gearbox can then be pulled out of the lower receiver.

Here is the upper half of the gearbox.  It's very strong although I've seen more reinforcements near the front on other gearbox shells.  KWA and VFC spring to mind.  From here you can see a normal ported brass cylinder and the screws to open the gearbox shell are on the opposite side.  They all have a blue threadlocker applied to them.  With the upper gearbox removed you can pull out the brass 6.06mm inner barrel and hop-up unit.

I haven't disassembled the upper gearbox shell yet sorry, but you'll see more of this very soon.  Inside here we have a plastic spring guide, M100 spring, full 16 tooth polycarbonate piston with one metal tooth which is quite prone to wear, non-ported polycarbonate piston head, brass ported cylinder, plastic cylinder head and a plastic air nozzle.  It's pretty standard and could use some improvements.  The piston head for one could be ported for better compression, but the grease applied to the o-ring and cylinder head make some good compression as you'll soon see.  The piston is not very strong at all and the spring guide is a letdown.  I'm not a fan of plastic cylinder heads either but it should hold up.  The air nozzle does not have a noticeable o-ring and can't be replaced with an aftermarket nozzle.  Everything else however is Tokyo Marui spec.  

I disassembled the lower gearbox a long time ago when diagnosing a contact issue (which turned out to be in the pistol grip) but I don't have pictures of the process.  The Turbo 3000 motor is a long type as usual for M4 type AEGs and again I can't photograph it since I soldered the contacts as they broke off.  It's a high torque motor and can handle a heavy spring upgrade from what I've seen.  The steel gears are very tough, well greased and well shimmed from the factory.  They move together with ease.  The 6mm solid bushings are steel, the selector plate is strong and the trigger assembly is standard for a V2 gearbox.

The mechbox of the ICS is now pretty much standard for AEGs, except of course the two piece design.  The reinforced gears and metal bushings were a nice upgrade compared to Tokyo Marui back in 2007, but now you can find nice steel gears, steel bushings and metal spring guides in sub $200 Jing Gong rifles.  The biggest letdowns are the below average polycarb piston and plastic spring guide which must be changed if going for high FPS upgrades.  I'd like to see a tighter inner barrel as well, a ported piston head and maybe larger bushings with bearings.  However after putting close to 3,000 rounds through it with 9.6v batteries and no internal upgrades the only noticeable wear is on a few piston teeth.  In conclusion it looks like ICS can upgrade their gearboxes a bit more in order to compete with the likes of manufacturers such as VFC, but there's nothing outright terrible inside the ICS mechbox.  Enough talk, lets see how it shoots.

Performance

For the shooting tests I used ICS 0.20g BBs except for one muzzle velocity test, for which I used Airsoft Elite 0.23g BBs.  A Swiss Arms chronograph was used for recording.

First up is a muzzle velocity test with ICS 0.20g BBs.  A total of ten shots were fired, and we come up with 340-360 FPS.  It should be noted that the gun has more mechanical noise than most other AEGs.  Don't be alarmed your motor is sitting right - it's a known thing with ICS two-piece gearbox guns.  Anyway this velocity is pretty damn good for something with a non-ported piston head.  This test was done after I had already put almost 3,000 rounds through it and I never re-greased the piston head, cylinder or cylinder head.  I'm impressed.

For kicks I did another muzzle velocity test; ten shots with Airsoft Elite 0.23g BBs.  I wanted to see how much these affect the muzzle velocity.  The result?  320-340 FPS.  

Below is the rate of fire test with an Intellect 9.6v 2000mah Ni-MH battery since the included one doesn't hold it's charge very well anymore.  We get 15-16 RPS, or 900-960 RPM.  This was expected as the weapon's specs suggest 850 RPM with an 8.4v battery.  To be honest I'd like to see a higher rate of fire - we don't need a motor with this much torque in a carbine length rifle.

I don't have photos of the accuracy test but I do have some very nice results.  The first test was done against a poor fire hydrant at approximately 100 feet away.  I used ICS 0.20g BBs and the result was 18 out of 20 hits.  Very nice for a stock gun.  It helps that there was no wind.  The second test was done at 30-40 feet with Airsoft Elite 0.23g BBs, shooting a water jug.  I didn't spend a lot of time adjusting the hop-up but I came up with a grouping right around 3 inches.  Again, fairly impressive.  None of the shots penetrated by the way but I'm glad to see it's still rocking. 

Finally, here are the groupings at 20 ft.  I used the AE 0.23g BBs and as you can see the wind made some of the shots off-center.  But once I got the sights zeroed in, bullseye.


Conclusion

Now we will conclude the review with scores (5 being the highest) and of course a list of pros and cons.

Packaging: The ICS M4A1 R.A.S. comes with everything you need - a nice rifle, two high capacity magazines, a 1,000 ct bottle of BBs filled with high polished seamless 0.20g BBs, a 9.6v 1700mah Ni-Cad battery and a wall charger.  It also came with a "Gripod" - a vertical foregrip actually is necessary for comfortable handling with the PEQ2 installed (unless you want the PEQ2 on the top foregrip rail).  The gun was well protected in the box and everything came without a hint of damage so I will give out a 5/5.

Externals: The externals of the ICS M4 are very good.  It's made almost entirely out of metal and there is almost no wobble - just a bit of side movement with the high capacity magazines.  The barrel is amazing - you can pick it up by the barrel and hold it out in front of you with nothing to worry about. The R.A.S. foregrip is ridiculously strong - there's a video of it on youtube being run over by a car and surviving so that deserves no explanation.  I did strip two screws off of it but that could be my own misdoing.  The spring tension release button is a nifty feature as well and the unique stock mounting mechanism is much better than a normal one.  However the lack of a functioning bolt catch upsets me plus it also lacks a mock gas tube, and isn't quite as authentic as others (airsoft trademarks, no metal screw holes for the pistol grip baseplate, mag catch is held by a screw).  I'll go with a 4.5/5.

Internal Build Quality: The internals are pretty much standard for an AEG in 2011, with the exception being the two piece gearbox.  The motor is better than many stock AEGs if you're looking for a high FPS gun but apart from this the mechbox is nothing special.  Strong steel gears and steel bushings are standard these days.  The stock shimming job and seal is certainly above average but the spring guide and piston are below average so we come out to a 4/5 here.

Performance: Well ICS is doing something right with their guns.  How the heck I pulled off that kind of accuracy is beyond me.  How the gun is achieving 340-360 FPS with what is supposed to be an M100 spring and a non ported piston head is just odd, but in a good way.  Some of you may find yourselves dropping an M90 spring into this gun for CQB use.  I'll take a half point off for the average rate of fire.  4.5/5.

Value: This is a tough one because I'm so late in the game with this review.  When I got it for $350 back in 2008 I was getting a damn good deal.  Now it's priced at $330 on AirsoftGI - that's $20 less than a VFC M4 E Series Tactical Carbine which has a crane stock (hidden wiring), functioning bolt catch, more realistically sized pistol grip, 8mm bearing bushings, "self shimming" gearset, steel bearing spring guide, more reliable piston, ported piston head, 6.04mm inner barrel, higher rate of fire and two springs included (M100 or M105 and M110 or M115 from what I gather).  However looking at the other competition, I can say for sure that I'd pick the ICS over those.  So I'll go with a 4/5 since you can still upgrade the pants off of the ICS and benefit from a two piece gearbox.

The ICS M4A1 R.A.S. is a very nice gun although a bit outdated compared to some of today's mechbox standards.  Externals are great and the unique properties around ICS are very nice to have.  Internals are average except for the two piece gearbox and although the rate of fire is nothing special, this ICS really excels in accuracy.  All in all it's a very good gun although its value has declined over the years.  I'll end this review with a few pics of it with external add-ons.
